Why VR was a celebrated no-show during Microsoft’s Xbox One X launch

After creatively touting a powerful new Xbox One X (formerly Project Scorpio) as a VR-capable console final year, Microsoft corroborated approach off during a grave E3 2017 launch—not even mentioning practical reality.

To be fair, Microsoft formerly signaled that practical existence was not going to be a priority for a Xbox One X during first. Microsoft already pronounced that it would add VR capabilities to Windows 10 PCs and a Xbox One X in 2018, and then suggested to Polygon that it would not be display off VR record during E3.

But while Microsoft member pronounced that a association is committed to delivering good churned existence gaming experiences, they combined that they have zero to contend as distant as practical existence goes for a Xbox One X. Instead, a association is throwing a weight behind a PC.

“Microsoft is committed to delivering good churned existence gaming experiences,” a association deputy pronounced in an emailed statement. “We trust that right now a Windows PC is a best height for churned existence as a open ecosystem and huge commissioned bottom offer a best event for developers, and Windows offers a many choices for consumers. Therefore, a primary concentration is creation a Windows Mixed Reality practice a success.”

Instead of practical reality, Microsoft is aligning a Xbox One X’s 4K capabilities with games like Forza Motorsport 7.

Why this matters: Virtual or churned existence competence eventually arrive on a Xbox One X console, and sales total from Oculus and HTC advise that consumers aren’t gnawing adult VR as most as vendors competence like. But with a HoloLens, Windows churned existence devices and some arrange of approaching Xbox VR marginal watchful in a wings, a repudiation looks a bit suspicious.

Wait a second…wasn’t Xbox One X a VR console?

You’d be forgiven, though, if we during suspicion that Microsoft would during slightest discuss a technology. A year ago, Xbox arch Phil Spencer told The Verge that both 4K and VR were a dual pivotal focal points for Scorpio: “As we saw 4K gaming and unequivocally high-end VR holding off in a PC space, we wanted to be means to move that to console,” he said.

But when it came time to exhibit a Xbox One X’s hardware, Microsoft began focusing some-more on a 4K capabilities of a new Xbox console than a VR capabilities. Publications became suspicious when a Xbox One X usually seemed to have a singular HDMI port.
